Veterans Day ceremony set for 9 a.m. Nov. 11 at Harris Street monument

Kilgore’s annual Veterans Day commemoration is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday at the U.S. Veterans Monument of Kilgore at Harris Street Park.
“Veterans Day is to remember the ones who have served. Memorial Day is to remember the ones who died serving our country,” veteran and former Kilgore Mayor Joe Parker said.
Participants from Kilgore’s Trail Life program (TX-5662) will present and retire the colors, and members of the Kilgore College Rangerettes will assist Mitzi Buck Hartfiel with patriotic music. This year’s featured speaker is an Air Force retiree, Bob Stoner of Kilgore.
Notably, “There are going to be some ladies there passing out poppies made out of cloth,” Parker said. “They’re trying to restart the American Legion downtown.
“We still have the building, but we haven’t had an American Legion in a long time.”
