Local musicians showcase Christmas selections Friday

There are two classical Christmas concerts in the works this week and next, beginning with Friday’s debut holiday performance by the East Texas Community Philharmonic Orchestra.

Spearheaded by conductor Shannon Roberts of The Studio Kilgore in partnership with Kilgore College, admission is free for the seasonal showcase, set for 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, in the Van Cliburn Auditorium of the Anne Dean Turk Fine Arts Center at KC.

Then, Monday, The Studio will put the spotlight on its student musicians and artists. The downtown arts education outreach’s annual Winter Showcase is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at First Baptist Church of Kilgore.

Monday’s event will feature songs by a wide variety of young musicians in the youth orchestras and Treble Choir as well as performances by The Studio’s ballet dancers. The evening will also include an exhibit of artwork by students under the direction of Micaela Loomis and her team.

First up, though, Friday night’s concert at the Van Cliburn is the first Christmas show for the still-new philharmonic.

The orchestra includes a range of musicians, including adults, college studios and advanced high schoolers who practice regular in the Kilgore College Band Hall. They’ve been hard at work on holiday selections with more concerts in the works for 2026.
