Kilgore Men & Women of Alliance celebrates legacy families alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Monday

Monday marks the 10th annual MLK celebration hosted by Kilgore Men & Women of Alliance.

The observance for famed civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. begins at 10 a.m. Jan. 19 in the Texan Theater, featuring additional recognition for local honorees.

“This is going to be, truly, our biggest celebration,” according to KMWA founder Victor Boyd, who also serves as Mayor Pro Tem on Kilgore City Council. “We’re going to have more families represented in our 10th annual MLK Day celebration, legacy families who have done the work here in Kilgore.”

In the spotlight for 2026:

  • Charlie “SnoBall” Walker
  • The Faber family, including Nerline and George A. Faber Sr. with George A. Faber Jr.
  • Bob & Merita Barbee
  • The Hunt family, including Willie Calvin, Alice and Waylon
  • Dr. George Woodrow Jr. “He was KC’s first black quarterback,” Boyd said. “He’s also the first black city councilman of Sunnyvale, Texas.”

This year’s commemoration will also include performances by Minister Martin L. King, Doris Hall-Pellum, the Bus 21 Choir and Mary “E.”

“We honor our Kilgore citizens who have lived their lives by serving our comunity and giving back through their dedication of helping Kilgore build unity and equal opportunity for all,” Boyd added. “We are honoring families who have a legacy that carries on from generation to generation of service in Kilgore.”
