Community Memorial Day remembrance set for 9 a.m. Monday at Harris Street Park

Veterans Day salutes our living service members; Memorial Day honors those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States of America.

Members of the Kilgore War Veterans Association will gather with community members at 9 a.m. Monday for the annual Memorial Day remembrance at Harris Street Park.

As ever, the ceremony at the U.S. Veterans Monument will open with the posting of the colors, this year by members of Kilgore Boy Scout Troop 252, as well as a prayer and the National Anthem. Mitzi Buck Hartfiel is coordinating additional patriotic music for the ceremony, organized by Joe Parker and other local veterans.

This year’s featured speaker will be Brad Clark, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

The annual display includes flags posted in honor of those Missing or Killed in Action. The local Scouts will retire the colors to end the ceremony along with the playing of “Taps” by Ofc. Angela Burch of Kilgore Police Department.

The remembrance is typically canceled in case of inclement weather.

“If it’s not too bad, we’ll move it under the pavilion there,” Parker said.
